Decatur residents know one of the best things to look forward to in spring is the Scovill Zoo reopening. When the weather warms up and the sun starts to peek out, it’s time to visit the amazing animals. Opening Day is coming soon at the Zoo. Be there for it and plan your trip to the Scovill Zoo.
Important Details for Your Visit
The most important thing to know is that the Scovill Zoo opens on April 1. You’ll want to get tickets for this occasion. Tickets for children 2-12 are $7.25, and most adult tickets are $9.25. Of course, you’ll also want to plan for the Z.O.& O. Express Train and the Endangered Species Carousel.
A Vital Part of the Community
The Scovill Zoo has been part of the Decatur community since 1967 and is a part of Scovill Park. Now, over 400 animals from six different continents live there. In addition to the train and carousel, visitors can see the mobile classroom programs and the Project Playground. But the Zoo does even more to serve the community. For instance, the Zoo Buddies class and Critter Tales are just two of the children’s programs available.
Planning Group Tours
If you’re going to the Zoo with 10 or more of your closest friends, a group tour is the way to go. While schools and organizations often use group tours, others can also schedule this type of tour. You can choose a guided tour or a self-guided tour. Of course, you’ll need to plan your group tour two weeks in advance. And you might get a discount on the tickets and rides for your group.
Animals Galore
When you head to the Zoo, plan to spend the day there. With over 400 animals, you’ll need plenty of time to see them all. From newts to caimans, there’s an animal here for everyone. Spend a little time checking out the cranes, birds of prey, or flamingos. Then say hello to the cats, primates, or wallabies. Or perhaps the fish are your favorite. And don’t leave without checking out the hissing cockroaches and tarantulas if you love insects.

Special Encounters
If you’ve always dreamed about an up-close encounter with your favorite animal, consider a special encounter. At the Scovill Zoo, you can schedule a special tour with a trained keeper to take a closer look. For instance, you can help the keeper prepare and feed meals to the penguins. Or, catch a training session with the cheetahs. In addition, some animals you can have a special encounter with include wolves, camels, and tortoises. And for the ultimate experience, try a Zoo Snooze with a tour, marshmallow roast, and early morning tour.
The Scovill Zoo is a wonderful way to learn more about some of the remarkable animals around the world. Don’t miss Opening Day; plan to go back often throughout spring and summer. See you at the Zoo!
