Enjoy A Hike At Macon County Conservation District

Love couple hikers in the forest, walking and speaking for a good place for camping

A lot of people love to spend time outdoors during the fall. With cooler temperatures and beautiful colors, it makes sense. If you live in Decatur, Illinois, or plan to visit during this time of year, check out the Macon County Conservation District. There, you’ll discover not one but five areas to hike. Not only that but there are several historical sites to visit. This is even home to a fully restored 19th-century farmhouse.

Rock Springs Conservation Area

Located on the southwestern portion of Decatur, Rock Springs is a gorgeous place to hike. You can enjoy multiple trails and spend time at the Ecocenter Nature Center. This museum allows you to explore the county’s natural history. This provides a fund and educational time for everyone. This conservation area is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. On Saturdays, you can hike from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and on Sundays, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Friend’s Creek Conservation

Located in Cisco, Illinois, not far from Decatur, this is another outstanding place to hike. It boasts three trails that wind through the property. It also has two pavilions. There are even picnic areas, camping, a playground, and a fishing creek. Onsite is the historical Bethel School. You’ll love the scenery and abundance of natural habitats.

Fort Daniel Conservation Area

Also in Macon County is this conservation area just east of Mt. Zion. In addition to more than 4 miles of excellent walking trails, you’ll find a playground and a large pavilion. Many people enjoy this site because the trails offer different levels of terrain. It’s also a place with a lot of wildlife, various grass species, and water.

Griswold Conservation Area

This is in Blue Mound, located in the southwest area of Macon County. Because it only has a one-half-mile trail, it’s a great place for younger children just learning to hike. There is also a playground, pavilion, and several picnic areas. However, the glacial kame mounds are what make this a popular destination. It stretches more than 45 acres with an abundance of animals and birds.

Sand Creek Conservation Area

While all the areas have something special to offer, this one, also located in Decatur, is a must-see. In addition to more than seven and a half miles of hiking trails, it has trails designated for horseback riding. So, if you have horses, you can pull your trailer into one of the parking pads. The site features hitching racks and picnic areas complete with grills. This conservation area is 794 acres of bliss.
