Rock Springs

The Rock Springs Conservation Area and Nature Center is the crown jewel of Macon County. This nature center and conservation area is full of learning opportunities and outdoor activities. With cross-country skiing, wildlife, events, and so much more, it’s no wonder the people of Illinois count it as one of their favorite destinations.

Get the scoop on some of the best things to do here in the winter.

Cross-Country Skiing

Hey baby, it’s cold outside, but that’s OK because that just means it’s time to go cross-country skiing at the Rock Springs Conservation Area and Nature Center. As long as there are at least four inches of snow on the ground, you can rent some skis, boots, and poles from the center and take off on your own adventure. Rentals are $8 for two hours and $20 for 24 hours. With miles of ski trails, you’ll get quite a workout in, and you’ll enjoy a heavy dose of winter fun.

Wildlife Viewing

Illinois’ rivers, lakes, and streams are full of wildlife, and you can see it for yourself at the nature center. The center has amphibians and reptiles for viewing, and you’ll learn a lot about the animals when you stop by. The center has recreated their habitat, so you’ll see what these animals are like in the wild, all while maintaining a safe distance. It’s a lot more enjoyable to see the wildlife in the center as opposed to coming face to face with a reptile while enjoying a day at the river.

Events

The Rocks Springs Nature center hosts events throughout the year and some of the best are coming up this winter. For instance, you can attend the Eagle Viewing Trip at Starved Rock State Park on Feb. 2 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. It costs $25 a person and will give you the chance to spot wintering eagles. Eagles are always so neat to see in person, and it’s even better when you have a guide along to tell you about these cool animals.

The Bluegrass Music Jam is sure to be a lot of fun as well. This event is free to attend and will run from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Feb. 10. Volunteers will be playing some of your favorite bluegrass tunes, and you’re welcome to bring an instrument and play along.

The nature center also has other events and trips coming up, so be sure to check out the event calendar so that you can sign up for a trip or another event.
