The History

The Macon County Historical Society began on May 25, 1916, when twelve people met at the Decatur Public Library. In August of 1916, the society began asking locals for any artifacts of historical interest pertaining to Macon County, the city of Decatur, or the state of Illinois. The museum’s location has changed over the years. It was once housed in the old North Cumberland Presbyterian Church. It is now located at the former Excelsior South School. The old school was dedicated to the Macon County Historical Society in 1979 on the 150th anniversary of the founding of the city of Decatur and Macon County.

The Macon County History Museum regularly hosts educational events and community events and fundraisers. Take a look at the Events page for upcoming book readings, seminars, and more.
